THE GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT

The costume design process takes into account the journey in parallel worlds in which a man/ a woman -Brother /Sister -respectively ascend from poverty in the 1860s to social recognition in the late 1880s in Oswego and Buffalo NY.

From being a con artist Brother/Sister quickly becomes a prominent religious figure taking advantage of some people’s fear of the technology changing the world in many ways from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Brother/Sister manipulates the wonder of the telegraph and claims it to have healing powers. The designs had to integrate a sustainable paper as the story called for the ticker tape to become a sacred instrument, which is used to weave blankets and hats used as divine protection. The creation of the unisex hats, worn during worship, were inspired by the telegraph ticker tape , weaving and Origami technique.
